There is something incredibly special about an intimate wedding in New Brunswick. The salty air. The long summer sunsets. Your parents’ house down the road. The people who truly matter gathered.


If you're planning a wedding in Bathurst, Caraquet, Shippagan, Tracadie, or anywhere in the Acadian Peninsula, this guide will walk you through how to create a backyard wedding that feels effortless, intimate, and beautifully you.

1. Choose the Right Backyard (Yes, It Matters)



Not all backyards are created equal.  When choosing the location, think about:

  • Space for a tent (even if you don’t think you need one)
  • Parking options (field? neighbour’s driveway?)
  • Bathroom access (rentals are often needed)


Pro tip: NB weather is unpredictable. Even in July. Always have a rain plan (even if it’s just a simple white tent). Rainy weddings can be magical… if you’re prepared.

2. Embrace the Intimate Guest List



Backyard weddings shine when they’re intentional. Instead of 200 guests, think:

  • 40–80 of your absolute favourite humans
  • The people who raised you
  • The friends who feel like home


Smaller guest lists mean:

  • Less stress
  • More time to actually talk to people
  • More budget flexibility for food, florals, and photography


In small towns, weddings often feel like community events,  but your wedding gets to be different. It gets to feel like yours.

3. Rent Smart (And Keep It Simple)


Even small weddings require logistics,  but don’t let that scare you.


You’ll likely need:

  • Tent
  • Tables & chairs
  • Lighting (string lights = instant magic)
  • Portable washrooms
  • Generator (depending on setup)


Keep your design cohesive but simple... Neutral linens, local florals & candles everywhere. You don’t need over-decorating. The charm is already there.

4. Plan Around THE Weather


Let’s be honest. New Brunswick weather keeps us humble.  Think: Late June, July, August, Early September. Have: A rain backup plan, blankets for cool evenings, bug spray baskets (trust me).


Golden hour is GORGEOUS (especially near the water). If your backyard overlooks the bay or is a short drive from the coast, plan 15 minutes for sunset portraits. You will never regret it.

5. Choose Vendors Who Understand Intimate Weddings


Backyard weddings move differently than ballroom weddings. You want vendors who: are flexible, love documentary-style moments, don’t need rigid timelines and are comfortable in non-traditional settings.


Look locally first,  many incredible vendors serve the Acadian Peninsula and surrounding areas. When your team understands small weddings, the day flows naturally.

6. Create a Relaxed Timeline

The biggest mistake couples make? Over-scheduling.


Weddings are meant to feel unrushed, authentic and emotional.


So don't be afraid to build in buffer time. Extra 15 minutes before ceremony, a long cocktail hour & sunset portraits without pressure


The beauty of being at home? You’re not being kicked out at 11pm.

7. Make It Personal


This is where these weddings truly shine. A ceremony in front of your childhood home. A parent walking you down a garden path. Local seafood catered family-style. First dance under string lights and a bonfire at the end of the night.


You don’t need a grand ballroom to create emotion. You need intention.

8. Photography Tips


For the best photos:


  • Avoid harsh overhead midday light
  • Clear cluttered areas beforehand
  • Trust candid moments over stiff posing


The magic is the in-between moments... Your grandmother watching from the porch, your dad fixing a chair, kids running barefoot.
